Hongsan Taebongsan Fortress

Hongsan Taebongsan Fortress (鴻山 胎封山城) is a mountain fortress of Baekje located in Hongsan-myeon, Buyeo County, South Chungcheong Province. It was designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 368 on January 11, 2000.

Overview

The fortress was built on the summit of a mountain with an elevation of 90 m, north of Hongsan Elementary School. The western part of the fortress wall was partly cut away by the access road to a sports park within the fortress.

Judging from the cut section, only the base of the wall was laid with neatly arranged stones, and the interior and upper parts appear to have been built up entirely with earth, but the outline of the current fortress wall is not clear. Artifacts from multiple periods have been found inside the fortress, including plain-patterned pottery fragments, mat-patterned pottery fragments, Baekje pottery fragments, and roof tile fragments. Based on the Baekje pottery, it is highly likely that the fortress began to function in earnest after the relocation of the capital to Sabi during the Baekje period.

It was also the site of the Hongsan Battle, in which General Choe Yeong decisively defeated Japanese pirates (Waegu) in the late Goryeo period.
