Yang Zhen (Eastern Han)

Yang Zhen (楊震, 54 – 124) was an official from the early to middle period of the Eastern Han, whose courtesy name was Boqi (伯起), and he was a native of Huayin County (華陰縣) in Hongnong Commandery. He was the eighth-generation descendant of Yang Xi, a founding meritorious subject of the Western Han, and his great-great-grandfather Yang Chang had served as chancellor of the Western Han.

Life

Living during the Eastern Han period in China, he loved learning from a young age and earned the honorific "Confucius of Guanxi" (關西孔子). He held a series of important posts, including Governor of Jingzhou, Administrator of Zhuojun, Minister of Works, and Grand Commandant. While he served as Grand Commandant, the power of An's wet nurse Wang Sheng (王聖) and the eunuch Attendant Fan Feng (樊豊) was strong, and corruption in the court was widespread, so Yang Zhen submitted several memorials and remonstrated earnestly. After he was dismissed due to a slander by Fan Feng, he could not contain his indignation and took his own life.
