Park Seung-bin (朴勝彬, 1880–1943) was a Korean Lawyer, Educator, Korean linguist, and Social activist. His pen name was Hakbeom (學凡). He was born in Cheorwon, Gangwon State.
Biography
In 1907, he graduated from the law department of Chuo University in Tokyo, Japan, returned to Korea, worked as a prosecutor in 1908, and in 1909 opened a law practice as a lawyer.1
He took part in founding the Gyemyeong Club and was active in it, and in 1925 he assumed the post of president of Bosung College.
In 1931 he organized the Joseon Language Research Society and published its journal, Jeongeum (正音), opposing the mainstream Korean Language Society that descended from Ju Si-gyeong.2 His direct motive for devoting himself to research on the national language was that, while planning the compilation of a legal code as a lawyer, he keenly felt the need for unification of Korean orthography. Although the prevailing trend of the time was against his views and he faced adversity, he persistently asserted his convictions and his will and determination to resist the current of the times were strong. Based on the proposition that while theories of language research may be complex, the orthography used by the general public should be simple, and that the language and writing system of a nation must be a historically continuous entity, he opposed the complex and innovative "Unified Standard Korean Spelling" (「한글마춤법통일안」). However, he failed to win social support.1
In 1931, together with Choe Nam-seon and Oh Se-chang and others, he organized the Gyemyeong Club and published journals such as Gyeongmyeong (啓明), Sinmin Gongron (新民公論), Nakwon (樂園), Sinchonji (新天地), and Sinchongnyeon (新靑年). At the same time, he published several classical works and devoted himself to public enlightenment, struggling against Japan through the power of the press.2
He possessed a copy of the Hunminjeongeum Eonhae (訓民正音諺解), which appears to have been separated from the Worin Seokbo and bound on its own. It is currently held in the Yukdang Collection of the Asia Research Institute at Korea University.3
From 1933 to 1934, he served as the first president of the Chosun Football Association, which later evolved into today's Korea Football Association.
His works include Joseon Eohak Gangui Yoji (《조선어학강의요지》), Joseon Eohak (《조선어학》), Criticism of the 'Unified Standard Korean Spelling' by the Joseon Language Society (《조선어학회사정 '한글맞춤법통일안'에 대한 비판》), and Simplified Korean Grammar (《간이조선어문법》).
