Chae Mun-sik

Chae Mun-sik (蔡汶植, 16 January 1925 – 26 June 2010) was a politician of South Korea. He served as Speaker of the National Assembly in the latter half of the 11th National Assembly. He served as a member of the National Assembly for the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th terms. His family seat was Incheon.

Life

Born in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province, he graduated from the political science department of Seoul National University.

Under the Third Republic and the Fourth Republic, he was a member of the opposition New Democratic Party. After being included as a representative of the former opposition in the composition of the National Defense Legislative Council in 1980, he joined the new military regime's Democratic Justice Party and even served as a representative chairman. At the 1987 South Korean presidential election, he also served as chairman of the party convention when the Democratic Justice Party nominated its candidate Roh Tae-woo.¹ During the 1992 South Korean presidential election, he joined the founding of the New Korea Party, a faction of Lee Jong-chan that had left the Democratic Liberal Party in dissatisfaction with the nomination of its candidate Kim Young-sam.He died on 26 June 2010, at the age of 86.²
