**Jo Jun** (趙浚, 1346 – November 1405) was a scholar-official, [[Poetry|poet]], military officer, [[Politician]], and revolutionary of the late [[Goryeo]] and early [[Joseon]] periods. His family seat was [[Pyeongyang Jo clan|Pyeongyang]] (平壤), his courtesy name was Myeongjung (明仲), and his art names were Useo (吁齋) and Songdang (松堂). His titles were Lord Chungui (忠義君) and Pyeongyang Buwongun (平壤府院君). He was the great-grandson of [[Jo In-gyu]] (趙仁規), who served as [[Munha sijung]], the grandson of Jo Yeon (趙璉), and the fifth son of Jo Deok-yu (趙德裕), who served as Minister of Finance. He was also the father of [[Jo Dae-rim]], who married [[Princess Gyeongjeong]], the second daughter of [[Taejong of Joseon]]. ## Life In 1371 (the 21st year of [[Gongmin of Goryeo|King Gongmin]]), he was recommended for civil office through [[Eumseo]] (hereditary privilege). In 1374 (the 24th year of King Gongmin), he passed the civil service examination. During the reigns of King Gongmin and [[U of Goryeo|King U]], he held a variety of civil and military posts, and in 1384 he temporarily withdrew from office. After the [[Wihwado Retreat]] in 1388, he gained the trust of [[Taejo of Joseon|Yi Seong-gye]] and quickly returned to office. He served as Jijikjiksasa (知密直司事) and Daesaheon, among other posts, and was enfeoffed as Lord Chungui (忠義君). Immediately after [[U of Goryeo|King U]] was deposed and [[Chang of Goryeo|King Chang]] ascended the throne, he, as Miljiksasa (密直司事) and Daesaheon, impeached [[Jo Min-su]], the [[Munha sijung]], and drove him from office. In 1389 he also took part in deposing King Chang and installing [[Gongyang of Goryeo|King Gongyang]] on the throne. Three years later, in 1392 (the 4th year of King Gongyang), he joined [[Jeong Do-jeon]] and others in close accord to depose [[Gongyang of Goryeo|King Gongyang of Goryeo]] and enthrone [[Taejo of Joseon|King Taejo Yi Seong-gye of Joseon]], becoming a meritorious founder of the dynasty. He was especially knowledgeable about economics and finance, and through his land reform proposal he reorganized the economic foundations of Joseon. After he and his political partner [[Jeong Do-jeon]] parted ways over the issue of the Liaodong campaign, he cooperated in the First Strife of the Princes and took the lead in eliminating Jeong's faction. Throughout the early Joseon period, he served as Dotongsa, Munha Useojung, and Jwajeongseung, and in the seventh lunar month of 1403 he became [[Yeonguijeong]] Yeongui Jeongbusa. [[Taejong of Joseon|King Taejong Yi Bang-won]] always called Jo Jun "Chief Minister Jo" and never used his personal name. His son [[Jo Dae-rim]] married [[Princess Gyeongjeong]], was enfeoffed as Lord Pyeongnyeong (平寧君), and enjoyed power and the favor of the royal family.[^1] He was skilled at writing poetry and prose, and in 1397 (the 6th year of [[Taejo of Joseon|King Taejo]]) he compiled the *[[Gyeongje Yukjeon]]* together with [[Ha Ryun]] and others. ## Other In August 1388, he asked [[U of Goryeo|King U]] to correct the [[Reform|reform]] of the official system[^2] by setting right [the hundred officials](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E7%99%BE%E5%AE%98), and he requested that no one be allowed to enter the two chief councils (兩府)[^3] unless they knew only the [[State]] and forgot their own [[House]], or unless their dignity was such that it could be imposed upon a [[Foreign country]].[^4] ## Family - Great-grandfather: Jo In-gyu (趙仁規) - Grandfather: Jo Yeon (趙璉, Jo Ryeon) - Father: Jo Deok-yu (趙德裕) - Elder brother: Jo Hu (趙煦) - Nephew: Jo Hwa (趙禾) - Elder brother: Jo Rin (趙璘) - Elder brother: Jo Jeong (趙靖) - Elder brother: Jo Sun (趙恂) - Self: **Jo Jun (趙浚)** - Son: [[Jo Dae-rim]] (趙大臨) - Younger brother: [[Jo Gyeon]] (趙狷) ## Works in which Jo Jun appears - *[[Gaeguk (TV series)|Gaeguk]]* ([[Korean Broadcasting System|KBS]], 1983–1983, actor: [[Noh Ju-hyun]]) - *[[Chudong-gung Mama]]* ([[MBC]], 1983–1983, actor: [[Hyeon Seok (actor)|Hyeon Seok]]) - *[[Tears of the Dragon]]* ([[KBS 1TV|KBS]], 1996–1998, actor: Moon Chang-gil) - *[[Jeong Do-jeon (TV series)|Jeong Do-jeon]]* ([[KBS 1TV|KBS]], 2014–2014, actor: [[Jeon Hyun]]) - *[[Six Flying Dragons]]* ([[SBS]], 2015–[[2015]], actor: [[Lee Myung-haeng]]) - *[[Taejong Yi Bang-won (TV series)|Taejong Yi Bang-won]]* ([[Korean Broadcasting System|KBS]], 2021– , actor: [[Noh Young-guk]]) ### Films - *[[The Age of Innocence (2015 film)|The Age of Innocence]]* (2015, actor: [[Ki Ju-bong]]) ## Notes This article includes content based on text distributed under the GFDL or CC-SA license by [[Daum|Daum Communications]] (now [[Kakao (company)|Kakao]]) in the Global World Encyclopedia. ## Notes [^1]: *Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty*, Taejong vol. 9, 5th year (1405, Eulyu / Ming Yongle 3), 6th month, 27th day (Sinmyo), 1st article [^2]: [“관제(官制)”](https://encykorea.aks.ac.kr/Article/E0005000).
