**Biyeon** (卑衍, ? – ?) was a general under [[Gongsun Yan]] during the [[Three Kingdoms period (China)|Three Kingdoms period]] of [[China]]. He resisted [[Sima Yi]] but was defeated. ## Life In 238 (2nd year of [[Jingchu]]), the [[Grand Commandant]] [[Sima Yi]] marched against [[Gongsun Yan]] with 40,000 [[infantry]] and [[cavalry]]. Biyeon and [[Yang Zao (Cao Wei)|Yang Zao]] set up obstacles such as [[moat]]s across more than 20 [[li]][^1] at Yaosui County (遼隧縣, 遼隊縣) and opposed them with several tens of thousands of men. Sima Yi then tried to break through the defensive line to the southeast. The [[Wei (Three Kingdoms)|Wei]] army focused its attention there, but this was in fact a deception by Sima Yi's strategy: the Wei army circled north, crossed the [[river]], left only part of its force to face the enemy, and rushed straight toward Xiangping. Xiangping County was the base of Gongsun Yan, the [[Grand Administrator]] of [[Liaodong Commandery|Liaodong]]. Biyeon and the others abandoned the fortifications they had built with great effort and hastily attacked Sima Yi with all their strength, but Shoushan was breached and Xiangping was surrounded. In the end, Gongsun Yan was executed and his subordinate officials were also [[execution|executed]]. It is unknown from the records whether Biyeon was executed at this time, surrendered earlier, or was [[killed in action]], as no further records exist. ## Romance of the Three Kingdoms In the novel *[[Romance of the Three Kingdoms]]*, which is not a historical record, Biyeon advances to Yaosui County to block Sima Yi, laying out moats, abatis (鹿角), and other obstacles to resist him, with the army set at 80,000 men. Biyeon and Yang Zao only remained defensive, intending to ambush the Wei army when its [[food]] and fodder ran out and it withdrew, but Sima Yi bypassed them and headed directly for Xiangping. Biyeon and the others also withdraw to Xiangping, where they suffer from [[ambush]]es by [[Xiahou Ba]] and [[Xiahou Wei]]. At Shoushan they meet reinforcements sent by Gongsun Yan, turn their [[horse]]s around to challenge Xiahou Ba, but cannot withstand him for even a few bouts and are killed in action. ## References - *[[Book of Jin]]*, Volume 1, Annals 1, Gojoseon-je Sima Yi - *[[Records of the Three Kingdoms]]*, Volume 8, Book of Wei 8, [[Gongsun Zhuo]] ## Notes [^1]: The *Book of Jin*'s Annals of Emperor Xuan states sixty or seventy li, but this follows the Biography of Gongsun Zhuo in the *Records of the Three Kingdoms* and volume 74 of the *[[Zizhi Tongjian]]*.
